While researching my family lines (STEVENS/ STEEN/DEAR/MULLICAN) of Rankin County, Ms. an elderly cousin said that my gg-grandfather STIRING ELLIS STEVENS (1837-1876) was shot and killed along with "a Butler guy" while they plowed their fields.Asking why they were killed, she replied "somthing to do with that old war".Grandpa STIRING died in 1876 and I haven't been able to find a BUTLER with approximately the same date of death in that area. His death was twelve years after the civil war which makes it odd that they would have been killed that long after the war or someone held one heck of a grudge.
STIRING is buried at Mountain Creek Baptist Church with his widow REBECCA JAYNE DEAR (1845-1926)
My question to this forum and particularly Rankin County BUTLER researchers.
Has anyone ever heard of a double murder of a BUTLER and STEVENS somewhere in the area of Florence, Mountain Creek, or Star, Mississippi in 1876???
