Re: John Bye, Odiham, Hampshire
This is not a reply to your message on the Message Board but to the e-mail you sent me via Turk & Bunty Humphrey. I am sorry I haven't been able to reply sooner but received your e-mail the day before we went on holiday.
At the moment I will answer your specific questions.
John & Margaret's date of marriage:-
This took place on 5th January 1840 at St Pancras Church, London. The entry in the parish records reads:-
John Bye, of full age, bachelor, labourer, of Clarence Gardens, son of William Bye (deceased)
= Margaret Goreman, of full age, spinster, of York Square, daughter of William Goreman (deceased). Neither could sign their names.
You asked for the dates of birth of John (1818), William (1780) and John & Mary (married 1763). These are not possible to give you at present and will be very difficult to find. It all depends on what the vicar has written in the parish registers. For most baptismal entries only the date of baptism is given but occasionally a date of birth is also written in. Unfortunately, in your case all the entries only showed dates of baptism. It is just possible that from some other deposited source there could somewhere be the actual dates of birth.
You also asked about obtaining certificates for these earlier Bye's. I should explain that certificates can only be obtained from July 1837 when Queen Victoria introduced a formal registration system. These are available from the Family Records Centre in London or from local Register Office for the District in which the event took place.
You can, however, obtain photocopies of baptism/marriage/burial entries from parish records back to the 1500's (if they are legible!). These would be kept at the County Record Office for the County in which the event took place.
I have more information on tour line of the Bye's but at present can't go back any further than John Bye born about 1730.
I would be very interested if you could let me know the names of the 9 children of John Bye & Elizabeth Garling and the date/place of John & Elizabeth's marriage. If possible I would also be very grateful if you could bring these lines up to date.
Meanwhile I will get more information together and send it on to you. As I live less than 10 miles from Odiham if there is anything you want please let me know.
Look forward to hearing from you.
