Re: John M. Caddis/Caddess in Bibb Co., AL
Hi.I have been researaching my husband's family name since September 1999.I have found quite a bit of information but all the pieces are not yet together.However, I do have information on JOHN M. CADDIS.
The following information was taken from the Bibb County, AL Census of 1850:
James R. Codwise, 50, born West Indies
Martha A. (last name unknown), 36, born SC.
James M., 16, born SC.
Mary J., 12
David W., 10
Amy M., 5
On Bibb County, AL Marriages 1820-1862:James M. Codwise married Martha Ann Barnes on December 9, 1855 in Bibb County, AL.
On Bibb County, AL 1860 Census:
D. W. Codwise, 20 (probably David, son of James R. and Martha).
James W. Codwise, 26
Martha A. Codwise, 24 (Martha Ann Barnes)
John M., 3
Martha 12 (not sure of who she is yet - could be younger sister of James)
John M. also had 3 (probably half) brothers (1) William (2) Charles C. and (3) Benjamin Franklin Caddis.
Sometime after the Civil War, the name changed from CODWISE to CADDIS, reason unknown.
According to members of the family:John M. Codwise Caddis married (1) Laura Wooley.They had 3 children (Jesse, unknown girl and Leonard Taylor Caddess born about 1886.(Note:The name changed spelling - John M. left his wife in Texas and she changed the spelling to CADDESS.)
John M. Codwise Caddis also married (not sure of order of marriages):(2) Mary Emmerline Hobson (3) Margaret Clements and (4) Amanda Clements Greathouse.
John M. Codwise Caddis and Mary Emmerline had the following children:(1) John Wesley Caddis (2) James William Caddis (3) Jackson W. Caddis and (4) Rosie Mae Caddis.
