Hi John,
What I am trying to decipher is the connections, if any, of Caldwells in Ireland. It would be preposterous to assume that we all derive for examble from William of Straiton and his family.
Therefore I am looking at particular groupings in an attempt to establish any family ties.
The Drumclamph family falls into a group who have all leased lands in the Manor of Derrygoon on the Abercorn estate. The other families are; Caldwells of Upper Meaghey(Letterbin),the Caldwells of Belnalone(spelt As Ballylennon in the COI records Castlederg)the Caldwells of Ratyn and the Caldwells of Magheracreggan. The latter Magheracreggan Caldwells are the only one,s in this grouping who are mentioned in the HMR,S 1666,as William and Robert of Magherscreggan. The other families leases date after the Williamite wars and could be either new arrivals or children of Maghercreggan Caldwells.
The specific area in co Tyrone is allapproximatelywithin a 5 mile square area to the north and south of the Newtownsteward to Castlederg road.
This area embraces also the Caldwells of Lisnafin,Caldwells of Tievenny, Caldwells of Killeen (who are related to the Caldwells of Killen who are related to the Caldwells of Magherageeragh.
The Caldwells of Ballybogan Lifford Parish of Clonleigh Barony of Raphoe.John of Cloneigh is mentioned in the HMR,S of 1665 as having 2 hearths. In Raphoe North HMR,s 1665,James Robert and William are mehtioned.
Question;are these the founding fathers of the Ballybogan Caldwells and not the Inishowen Caldwells Parish of Templemore(William of Ballimkernaglan, John,Alexander and Robert.
