William James Callis (1830-1909) was my great great grandfather. He lived and died at Gwynn's Island, VA on the Chesapeake Bay in Mathews County. He ran a schooner to Baltimore during the Civil War, using oyster shells for ballast on his return trips. He dumped these oyster shells off of a point near his home on Milford Haven and eventually a wharf was built there, Callis Wharf, an important seafood center during the 1950's and early 1960's. His wife's name was Elizabeth Callis, she died four years prior to him. I live on Gwynn's Island, just up the road from Callis Wharf.
