O.V. "SHORTY" CALVERT, 91, passed away on September 12, 2002 at home. Shorty was a long time resident of Aldine and an employee of Aldine Independent School District with 60 years of service and served on the Board of Trustees of Aldine Teachers Credit Union for over 20 years. He attended the original Aldine school, began his career as a bus driver, organized the districts 1st maintenance and transportation department and retired as Director of Maintenance in 1975. After retirement he continued his relationship with Aldine District by working the football games at Thorne Stadium as a ticket taker. In 1992, he was honored by a school being named after him, O.V. "Shorty" Calvert Elementary. As he stated, "Aldine is all I know. He is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Annie Bell. Shorty is survived by daughters and son-in-laws; Janet and Freddy Stephens, Barbara and Ferris Johnson, Ethel and Kenneth Cox; grandchildren, Karen Churchill, Lynette Howell and Vernon Johnson; great grandchildren, Kyle and Courtney Howell, Brian Simmons, Michael Churchill and Jake Johnson. He leaves behind many cherished family members and friends. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Melanie, for all her patient and loving care. Visitation will begin 4:00 PM Friday, September 13, 2002. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, September 14, 2002 at Brookside Funeral Chapel with interment to follow in Brookside Memorial Park.
