Re: Family Tree DNA- Calvert surname status and needs
I have suffered through the same conflicting entries on Ancestry as I tried to separate the John Calvert of Mifflin family from the John Calvert in Cumberland.
Point 1:John Calvert (b. ca, 1743) of Chester Co. PA was married to Jane Swayne Mercer Calvert. Her first husband, Joseph Mercer, died leaving her with two or maybe three children.Orphan's Court of Chester provides proof that Jane Swayne Mercer marries John Calvert. This John Calvert is the son of Thomas Calvert and Sarah Williamson, and cannot be the John (b. ca 1769)or Joseph Calvert (b. ca 1748)of Cumberland simply because the marriage occured in 1763. And, also because of point 2.This John is most likely the same John Calvert of Mifflin as evidenced in the proximity of Jane's son, Amos Mercer,in Mifflin; and in family stories linking these Calverts and Mercers.
Point 2: Albert Cook Myers "Immigration of Irish Quakers into Pennsylvania" and Gilbert Cope "Smedley Genealogy" list all members of the Thomas Calvert and Sarah Williamson family and never is a Joseph Calvert mentioned. In all the tax lists and Quaker notes I have come across, never is a Joseph mentioned with this family, and nothing that would suggest that John and Joseph are one and the same.
Point 3:Thomas Calvert of Chester has a cousin, Thomas Calvert, who marries a Charity Grubb in 1747, and they move shortly to Cumberland Co., PA.I believe this is the crux of all the misunderstandings.I believe that Joseph Calvert is their son and was married to Anne Warner, one of their sons being John Calvert of Cumberland who marries Mary McCurdy (off top of my head). The Calverts, McCurdys, and Applebys move to Elbert Co. GA, and then on to Bedford and Giles Co. TN, before ending up in White and Pope Co. in IL.There is a link to Joseph's will on, I believe, Galllatin, IL website.
My line is from Thomas Calvert and Sarah Williamson, but I am still attempting to divorce Joseph and John Calvert of Cumberland from their family. But at the same time, they are of the same family one more generation back, descending from the brothers Joshua and Daniel Calvert of Chester.
