Mat Calvin from Atlanta or New York
Hello Calvin line! I am looking for the descendant of James W. Daniel and MaryAnn Brooks, thought to be Mat Calvin, that attempted to interview an elderly, now deceased, Sallie Fannie Daniel, of Danielsville, Madison County, GA.I too am a descendant of James W. Daniel and Mary Ann Brooks and would like to compare information with Mat Calvin. The family oral tradition is that our ancestor, thought to be American Indian, known as Mary Ann Brooks, was washing clothes at a stream, (prior to 1836,) when she was surrounded by a group of militiamen, captured, raped, and enslaved. These men were sent to fight in an Indian uprising, location unknown, and during this engagement, one of the men, James W. Daniel, from Danielsville, Madison Co., GA, received a leg injury which, at some point, required amputation.Mary Ann Brooks was made to care for this man, eventually being taken back to the Daniel plantation.During the last 20 years another Brooks researcher interviewed Sally Fannie Daniel (through her screen door). When asked if she knew James W. Brooks, she said she did and fondly referred to him as “Uncle Jimmy”.(I believe he would have been her half-great uncle.)The elderly Daniel shared how the Daniel family wanted the boy to have formal schooling, but Uncle Jimmy refused. She also shared how a woman, described as a mulatto, from N.Y. or Atlanta, tried to interview her claiming she was a descendant of James Daniel and Mary Ann Brooks.Ms. Daniel refused to talk to this person but I would love to share information on this line.Thank you for any help in locating this Mat Calvin.Sandy Reid
