Re: family /Geneology to Walter Canastey
I'm tracking my family (Caughron) and may have some useful information on a Canatsey family in Kansas.
My great grandparents were Samuel Caughron
b-1839 in Johnson County, Indiana. His wife
was Nancy June (Jenny) Canatsey b-1849 in Johnson County, Indiana. They married in
Morgan County, Indiana on December 14, 1865
and moved to Iola, Kansas (Allen County) around 1875.Two of Jenny Canatsey's brothers moved to Iola, Kansas with them.
Unfortunately, I do not have the name of the two brothers as my documentation was misplaced in a move about 5 years ago.
I have been to Iola, KS looking for Caughron and Canatsey grave sites and found the graves of Samuel and Jenny in the Iola City Cemetary. They died about 8 months apart in 1923.A second (newer) cemetary in Iola has the graves of a male and female Canatsey who I assume were married and who died on the same date early this century.I don't have enough to connect these Canatsey names to my tree so I did not pursue this any further.
One thing I thought was very evident in the older Iola city cemetary was the very large population in the cemetary who were Civil War (Grand Army of the Republic emblems on their graves) veterans with Indiana ties.
It might be beneficial to look in the Indiana Civil War records for Canatsey's.If you look ih Samuel Caughron's Civil War file he notes in a pension claim the names of his wife (Nancy June Jenny Canatsey) and the names of here two Canatsey brothers.
Hope this helps and feel free to share info or other questions.....
