At last a place to askquestions relating to this surname ! Our record for the spelling of this name begins with the New Netherland Dutch ways "KENNEF(F)/KENNIF(F)/KENNISS. We know nothing of...(their place of origin?), or (on what ship they arrived and at what date??) The first KENNIFF we have mention of, in our family record, is Jeremiah. His son,Jeremiah married Anna Woelffe; daughter, Esther married Nathan Bally/Bailey; daughter, Sara married a Beuly/Bailey ; daughter Marytje married William Teller; and daughter,Anna/Annetje (our line) married Abram/Abraham Hendrickse Van Amburgh,born 1670. Abram and Anna (Kenniff) Van Amburgh's children were baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church.They were early settlers in Fishkill,Dutchess Co., N.Y.and their children were baptized at Kingston. About 1706 they moved down to Cortland and the youngest children were baptized there at the old church in Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown. Son,Hedrick Van Amburgh(Our line) born 1695 at Fishkill, Dutchess Co.,N.Y. married 23 April 1732 to Hannah SMET,daughter of Caleb Smith of Phillipsburgh. They had a son,Abraham VanAMBURGH (our line ) born 1735. Hannah (SMET) VanAMBURGH did not live long. Hendrick VanAMBURGH moved back to Fishkill, Dutchess Co.,N.Y.and married 2nd,Elizabeth ESHEL before 1740.
