I am descended from the free Mulatto Cannady family. My ancestor, Sylvia Cannady (daughter of Hugh Cannady), married Major Debrix, in Sussex County, by "consent of Hew Cannady," with Joseph Cannady's surety, on Feb. 7, 1797.
Hugh Cannady, the father of Sylvia C. Debrix (she died c.1813), was ordered by the churchwardens to bind out his "orphan children," on Nov. 16, 1775.He lived and farmed in Sussex County, Virginia. One of his sons moved to Michigan as an adult.
Sylvia gave birth to Henry Debrix (c.1805), who married Sarah Keemer, and she gave birth to Patrick H. Debrix (b.1838), who was the father of my great-great grandmother, Catharine F. Debrix Vicks (1874-1927).
