Canons of Canonsburg, PA
I know that Canonsburg, PA is named for Col. John Canon who is said to have immigrated there from VA and was a friend of George Washington. My ancestor was also named John Canon. He was born in Scotland around 1736. He came to the colonies and was in the Canonsburg area, so he may have been anephew of Col. John Canon.
For ease of identification, I'll call the younger John Canon John Canon, Sr. He married a Martha A. The Mormons say that her name was Martha Alexander and kin to John McKnitt Alexander, however, I believe that her name was Martha Addison since one of their grandsons was named James or William Addison Canon. John, Sr. went south with the Alexanders and ended up in Mecklenburg County, NC. They founded a Presbyterian church there on a creek in western NC and named it Poplar Tent Pres. Ch.
Martha and John Sr. had a son named John Canon, Jr. who is listed in the DAR Patriot Index. He carried supplies to the revolutionary army and was later made a segeant. He married Mary Scott "Polly" Moore (some of my cousins through Alfred Canon and Elizabeth Hope have promoted him to colonel). I have their children in my files.
Polly Moore was the daughter of Moses Harvey Moore and Ann Alexander. the Canons intermarried with the Alexanders quite a bit. Ann may have been John McKnitt Alexander's sister. John was the secretary of the committee of Public Safety which drafter the Mecklenburg Declaration on May 20, 1775. The Mecklenburg Declaration a formal declaration of indepence from the Crown, over a year before the Declaration of Independnce of 1776.
In 1839, Polly died and John. Jr. and his sons Moses Harvey Moore Canon and my gggrandfather Alfred Orville Canon set out for Marshall county, MS on a seven week trek called "The Exodus." At some time, perhaps when her father and brothers came, Abigail Canon and her husband Cyrus Alexander came to Byhalia, Marshall County, MS. Since there was no Presbyterian church in Marshall County, the family attended College Hill Pres. Ch. just north of Oxford and John Canon, Jr. is buried there. Alfred was a deacon in that church. He served as an elder in the Old Philadelphia Pres. Ch. that was later built in Victoria, MS until his death.
Alfred's first wife, Elizabeth Hope had also died before the family left NC and he married a widow named Ellen Stinson in 1850. I'm descended from their daughter Cora Lea, my ggrandmother.
Alfred donated land for the Old Philadelphia Pres. ch. on his plantation in Victoria, MS. It was built from hand made bricks by the slaves of members of the congregation. Later, it was taken down and moved to Red Banks where it still stands and is till used for some church functions.
