I am Lola Barritt Elders, daughter of Jasper Barritt of Highlands, Lyndoch, SA, grand-daughter of Ellen Mary Capper. Ellen Mary's father was Alfred Capper, of Unley, Adelaide, SA.He married Lucy Keckwick, I think also of a Quaker family.They had three other children beside grandmother;Henry, who married Florence Townsend, five daughters, Ida, Theo, Marjorie, Evelyn and Doris; Alice who married Howard Gore and was the mother of Max, and Kathleen, who married Matthew Henry Johnson;and Lucy Cawthorne Capper, who was never married, but was affectionately called by the family Aunt Louie. I am presently searching for a connection for Alfred to the Capper family in England.He may have been the brother of Henry Capper, "Capper's South Australia", 3rd ed. 1839, and of John Henry Capper, Principal Superintendent of Convicts under Sentence of Transportation, about 1824. I have just begun using the Web to search for information about previous Cappers in England, but if the above is of any use, I am pleased.
I began with the intention of finding out the origin of my father's unusual name, Jasper. It goes back at least to Jasper Capper, born 1751, I think in Rugeley, Staffordshire, who was the first of a large family to leave their Episcopal faith for the Society of Friends. He married Anne Fry, of the well known Quaker family connected with coca and chocolate, and their crusade against slavery, and child labour, and for prison reform. I own a book, The Memoir of Mary Capper, published 1888. She was Jasper's sister, and followed him into the Society of Friends, and spent her long unmarried life as a minister, teacher, mentor, a very worthy and devout woman, and I have gleaned the family material from that book.
