Re: CARBO, Ambroise b. Mahan, Menorca, Spain
Not sure if there is a connection......I had information from the Church in Menorca (Bealeric Islands).....and when I actually found Ambroise on a census with his family it was spelled Ambraise Carbon......(I did a later post on this)On this 1850 New Orleans census I found like 5 Carbo/Carbon's ....Ambroise/Ambraise was the only one I found from Spain.I found others from the West Indies and the Canary Islands.....all the rest showed as employment....either coffehouse or bartender.Ambroise/Ambraise was living next to another family from Spain...(a fisherman) and Ambroise was listed as an oysterman.I will try to re-check this census tonight.I did notice that on this 1850 one with the different spellings......that the only child at the time was Antonio.......this was later shown as Antoine....so apparantly they changed the spellings to more French sounding names at some point.(The records in Menorca use the Carbo spelling) So I guess the Carbon spelling could be something the census taker did.
Do you have any more information.....with dates so that I have more to check???
