Eben:Well,a little later. sorry. Thanks so much for your thoughts.I have not gone back to the athenaeum for various reasons, mostly because you only get ONE lifetime copy of material + I needed a small computer to bring so I wanted to do research first to make the most of my effort.
Please rememberthat I did not read all the files. The time reference coincided with the end of Cromwell's government, as the referenced Lord Stephen Smith (wife Mary Thomson) was in Cromwell's government and thus the reason for immigration, so 1658 - 1660. This timeframe allows for an arrival after the 1650 census and also putting Benjamin at marital age after arrival. Thus far no one has seen evidence of a Stephen Smith in Rhode Island. Is there evidence of Benjamin Smith in America before 1666? The file (Worcester Athenaeum)reference was that Phoebe Smith (wife of James Cargill and grandmother of the document writer, Lucy Cargill Waldo) was the great granddaughter ofLord Stephen Smith and wife Mary Thomson. There are a number of Smith ancestors, but Stephen Smith instead of Christopher Smith would be the correct relationship, that of great grandfather, that Lucy Cargill Waldo describes in her documents.Phoebe Smith>BenjaminSmith>Benjamin Smith>Stephen Smith/Christopher Smith.
PS you will need white gloves and an interview before handling papers.
