Hello Tania!
My mother's maiden name was Mary CARLAW Howat (b.10/10/19 Edinburgh d.22/11/89).
The presence of the CARLAW name I reckoned indicated Carlaw ancestry.
After digging around I found out the following:-
My maternal grandmother (m.SamuelHowat) was Agnes CARLAW Fortune.
Her parents were Cornelius Fortune andMary Hutchinson Gray (b. 3/9/1850). MHG's parents were Alexander Gray (ironmonger) and AGNES HENDERSON CARLAW (b.9/8/1816 m. 18/4/1848).AHC's parents were THOMAS CARLAW and Isobella Henderson (m.24/8/1815.
It is possible that THOMAS CARLAW was a Tobacconist/Tobacco Spinner.
The name Cathrin Duff (b. 1760, d.9/1/1804 aged 44) is possibly linked to THOMAS CARLAW (mother ?? a.n.other?)
One other thing - the CARLAW on MHG's birth cert.is spelt 'CAWLINA'.
I have nothing concrete to substantiate any of the above - it's all been passed down by very aged Scottish relatives - most dead now. Having said that, I reckon most, if not all, is fairly accurate. If I have dates etc missing above, it's because I don't know them.
I would be very pleased to hear from you if you can confirm any of my data, or, indeed, elaborate on it.
Regards,
Ian N.Watson
