CARNCROSS, GERNGROSS, CARNCROSE, CAIRNCROSS
My Carncross line is from Hans Juri Gerngross and his son Philip Jacob Gerngross who came from Germany to the Albany, New York area in about 1754/5.The name was written many ways, finally becoming Carncross in more modern records. Carncrose is a common spelling in those from northern New York State areas. The Cairncross spelling usually is found in England and Scotland and immigrants from there.
The German Carncross / Gerngross families spread through New York State from the Albany - Troy - Schenectady area along the Mohawk Valley to Schoharie County and Montgomery County, then my group went from Town of Charleston / Town of Root to Madison County and Chenango County, with my immediate ancestors settling in Town of Smyrna, Chenango County NY.Another branch went to Jefferson County and Lewis County in northern NY,a third branch settled in Cayuga County NY.Later many moved on to mid-western states.
Happy to share information I have and to hear from distant cousins. It is nice to finally have a Carncross forum available.
