Kit's family disfunctional?

By Douglas Whitlock March 17, 2004 at 08:20:07

This week I found some interesting information about Kit's daughter Adeline.Adeline Carson (b ca 1837) was Kit's daughter by his first wife Waa-nibe (Arapaho) After the death of Waa-nibe Kit took Adeline Carson back to MO to live in a convent school. On his way back he chanced to meet Col. John Fremont.Adeline was described a beautiful young woman who could out shoot and out ride most men.Reportedly she was briefly married to a Louis Simmons but died near Mono Lake California. At the time she was married to a Mr. Stilts.A plaque at Mono Lake says she died in 1858.However, I discovered Adeline Carson living in Tulare County, CA in 1860.Much to my surprise her occupation was listed as "Courtesan" (prostitute).Kits other children had a few problems too:
Son William Carson shot his father-in-law (Tom Tobin) and hit him with a hammer. They remained friends afterward.
Son Charles was divorced from his first wife Maria Guadalupe Richards in 1910 and remarried Mary Alice Gallagher 22 years his junior.
Daughter Rebecca committed suicide in Springer NM by taking an OD of Morphine.
Daughter Estella was divorced from her husband Spears E. Wood.
