The Complex Answer From Across The Pond
This Aheinly Analysis only becomes compelling when we note the proof Ancell Carter of London did not have a son Thomas (where both Visitations of 1634 enumerate only four 'sonnes' - to match the baptisms) and note both Visitations show Thomas (1.)... next ... to Ancell (6.) - on the horizontal - denoting equality as a brother. In brief, the following will prove two uncles and a cousinof our Thomas were Grocers and Citizens of London - which is exactly what Aunt Fanny told us in the first place: [Date Book of John of The Nest, Carter MSS 1858]
"Our ancestors came to Virginia about two hundred years ago & settled in Lancaster
County. The first one of the Carters was my grandfather's grandfather Thomas Carter
son of a London merchant of good family.
"I have heard said there was two brothers of them the other being a John Carter who
settled south of the river in Essex but further I can't say". [Note that only now does
our Thomas have a proven brother John].
"Our old Ancestor Thomas Carter was about 21 years old when he come to Lancaster
and he was a man of substance and position as a planter and tobacco trader. He was
married twice. First to an English woman whose name I've never heard, they had 2 or 3
children who all died young. She died and he married a Miss Dale of good connections".
[This ... sounds as if ... Thomas married even the English woman in Virginia].
This then, becomes a thorough explanation of the complexities:
The Parents of Capt Thomas Carter, Lancaster VA
Posted by: aheinly (ID *****5912) Date: February 24, 2012
It seems to me that old records indicate that William Carter and Anne Emery (not Ansell Carter and Jane Myles) were the parents of Capt. Thomas Carter of Lancaster County VA.
In the official pedigree of the Carter family in 1634 (In the Visitation of Bedfordshire) young Thomas Carter, the son of Mr. WILLIAM CARTER and ANNE EMERY, was recorded as ?aged 1?. This statement is followed by the phrase ?et amplius? which means this age cannot be contested later by an appeal. This would be the THOMAS CARTER who was born in 1632 in Great Barford, and was baptized on the 28th of Sept 1632 in All Saints Church Great Barford.
Meanwhile there were two other Thomas Carters around. One was Grandfather Thomas Carter who was in nearby Kempston and who (as head of the family) signed the 1634 pedigree. The other was Uncle Thomas Carter who was completing his apprenticeship in London.
Young Thomas Carter lost his mother at the age of 4, a stepmother and the age of 6, and his father at the age of 10. When young Thomas was 16 his grandfather Thomas Carter ?the Older? died.
Young Thomas Carter was designated as the sole executor of his grandfather?s will, [... false ...]while Uncle Thomas Carter was designated as his administrator since young Thomas was still a minor. Property in both Kempston and Great Barford were covered. The will included selling of the ?Barford? residence where relative Thomas Denton currently lived, to pay off debts, and then using income generated from the Kempston estate to finance young Thomas Carter?s education and livelihood for the next five years (until young Thomas turned 21).
SUMMARY
THE GRANDFATHER ? Thomas (of Kempston) Carter (b. Sep 1575), spouse Jane Bellay. He was born in Kempston, Bedfordshire County, UK. He raised his children in nearby Great Barford, and then moved back to Kempston. He was oldest brother of Ansell Carter, the Fleet Street merchant married to Jane Myles.
THE FATHER -- William (of Barford) Carter (b. May 1606), spouse Anne Emery. He was born and died in Great Barford, Bedfordshire County, UK. He and his spouse died before their children were adults. Anne Emery?s father allotted 700 pounds (160,000 US dollars in today?s money) for her to marry William.
YOUNG THOMAS CARTER ? Capt. Thomas Carter Sr. (b. Sep 1632), spouse Katherine Skipwith Dale.
He was born in Great Barford, Bedfordshire County, UK. He settled and died in Lancaster County PA, USA.
[sic for PA]
THE UNCLE -- Thomas Carter (b. Mar 1612). He was born in Great Barford and went to London where he was an apprentice in 1634. From 1647 to 1653 he was responsible for financing the career and education of his nephew. (In 1653 he was present in London to witness the will of a relative Elizabeth Anscell who resided at Great Barford). He may have been responsible for helping his nephew set up the plantation in Lancaster County, Virginia.

Paul T. Carter, in his New Origins, adds insight into our Agressive Merchants from London - which only now makes total sense:"It is important to understand that the Carter family from which CPT Thomas Carter of Barford descended were aggressive merchants in London. Thus, the Carter family members in the Virginia colony established trade with their family in England through tobacco. The Virginia Carters grew and exported tobacco to England, where the English Carters sold it. Passenger lists show numerous Carter passages between Virginia and England and back. In the 1634 Visitation of Bedfordshire England, William Carter of Kempston's grandson, Thomas, is described as "apprenticed in London."and ...
"Grocer and Citizen of London" was a title of prestige, Anscell
and [his oldest son] George Carter began their wills with this title."
In other words, Aunt Fanny and the complex story from Bedfordshire both explicitly tell us our Thomas arrived at the age of twenty-one.Hence, the year 1653 now becomes quite pivotal in sorting out the truth.Locating the Thomas Carter of the 1653 Tithe List of Lancaster will be most helpful, if not compelling.(There were several collectors assigned to different parts of the county). As previously stated, we need to sort out the Carters of Isle of Wight, who were in Lancaster until 1660 ... and ... who were cohorts of Col. John Carter.(King Carter was born 1662 and was sent back to England for a thorough education by his older brother John.)
Before we make further connections, we should skip ahead and note the obvious business accumen of Capt. Thomas Carter, Junior, where he was the highly regarded business manager for King Carter.According to Robert's will, for example, Thomas Jr. was not to be questioned in his settlement of the business affairs of the King!Ya think Junior got the equivalent of a London Apprenticeship in the Colony?Did our orphaned Thomas Sr. join his Uncle in London for his education/apprenticeship, or stay in Bedfordshire?
By the way, despite prominent declarations in the past, we were only "Dear friends and associaties", and ... not ... related to King Carter, whose father was a Vintner from London.{Dr. Hayes]John Carter of Corrotomon had his own set of Arms back in the Shires north of London.
