Casanova in Chios, Greece
During the Turkish massacre of the civilians on the island of Chios in 1823 (see Delacroix's Massacre at Chios)
a certain George Casanova was among those of the noble families hung/killed.My family hails from Chios, all branches of it.. (back until 1840 firmly.. before that I'm currently researching..)
My paternal grandmother (born Chios, Greece 1914) Despina Kalamaras told me once that her maternal grandmother had a maiden name of Casanova. (who would have been born in the 1840's) I am positive (if my gggrandma was Casanova) that i am also related to the George Casanova that was killed in the massacre.. reason being the name is NOT very common in Chios now and during the 1820's they were a close-knit noble but quite famous family.
Does anyone know of the Casanova's from Chios, Greece?
A great new thread on this topic.. maybe I have some Italian/Spanish/Sephardic Jew in my tree!
