Cordell/Caudell: GA 1840, AR 1850
I have finally found (for the first time) the names of my grandmother's parents in the 1850 census.Any help with additional information or leads will be greatly appreciated.
In the 1850 census, Abel Cordell, age 30, and wife Ann, age 35, are listed in Poinsett County, AR.Children listed as age 8, 6, 4, and 2 were born in GA, and an infant was born in AR.Abel was born in GA, Ann was born in NC.
The names of two of the children from the 1850 census are known: A. J., age 8, is my grandmother, Amanda Jane Caudell Hunt; and G. W. is George W. Caudell, whose descendants now live in LeFlore County, OK.The names of the others are not presently known. The 1885 will of Abel Caudell includes as heirs a Mrs. Higgins and a Mrs. Freeman.
From the 1850 listing, the following is deduced: Abel and Ann were married in GA about 1840 or 1841, and between 1848 and 1850, they moved to Poinsett County, AR.It is known that Abel went in the Gold Rush to California, and that he was living in Johnson County, AR, in 1855.
Abel's name in Johnson County, AR, is most often given as A. C. Caudell or Caudle. In one document, he is listed as having performed marriages as an M.G.
Any help on the origins in NC and GA of this Caudell/Cordell/Caudle family will be greatly appreciated.
