Causley
In researching my maiden name, Cosley, I came accross my gg grandfather (Benjamin) in an 1850 Dubuque, Iowa census with the spelling of Causley. Now I am confused as to the actual spelling. He is listed as a farmer from Canada along with his wife, Mary and two children (Adelia and Amelia). To confuse things even more, on a vacation at Glacier National Park, I came accross a book entitled "Belly River's Famous Joe Cosley" and the cover picture of Joe looked like he could be my grandfathers brother or uncle. The book shows Joe as being born on the Seven Nations Reserve in Ontario, the son of Stephen Cosley (a French Canadian fur trapper) and an Indian woman and that he was one of twelve children. They later moved to Blind Rivers, Ontario.Joe's mother spoke French, English and Chippewa-Cree and was reportedly the grandaughter of Sir Alexander Anderson.Joe led an adventurous life trapping and guiding.Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?
