Re: William CAWSE b.1815 England
Devon appears to be the center of the Cawse family origins. I purchased a search, "The World Book of Cawses" from Halbert's Family Heritage and discovered 40 Cawses in Devon (out of 114 worldwide). My records go back to a Richard Cawse (1747-1791) with two sons. There were several grandsons in the 1815 period but no William.
The family name apparently derives from the town of Caux in France and arrived in England with the Norman invasion in 1066. There is a Caus Castle (same derivation) outside of Shrewsbury in Shropshire. It's mentioned in Ellis Peter's Brother Cadfael mysteries. Most of the stones are gone but the outline of theearthworks are still evident.
