Hi Gene,
I am looking for info on the Cawthon/Stringer families.
My GGG-grandfather was Moses K Speight b 1805-1812 in GA.
It has been said that his mother was Elizabeth Cawthon dau. of William Cawthon and that Elizabeth first married Moses Speight, Burke Co, GA then married John Stringer, the brother of her sisters husband. They left GA for AL and I don't know much more. My Moses Speight lived for a time with his uncle John Speight in Wilcox Co, AL and is mentioned receiving a gift in the 1825 will of John Speight of Wilcox County, AL. Some researchers think that John Speight was Moses father but the will confirms that John was the uncle of Moses K speight. Moses also lived in Henry Co, AL and in 1833 married in Abbyville, AL. His wife was Martha Amanda Smith, b 1816 AL, dau of Sion (Simon) Smith of AL, originally of TN. I would love to know if someone has info on these Cawthon/Stringer people. It is quite difficult to get records for state of Georgia. So many were destroyed by fire or the Civil War.
Thanks for any help!
Best Regards,
Gail Walsh
