Hello, My wife is a Celaya from Caborca, Sonora. I can give you some information now, and maybe some in the future. The Majority of the Celayas are fair skinned people. They only time their skin became dark is thorugh marriage to people that have darker skin. The name Celaya came from a small province on the Spain/France border. It was always Celaya until two brothers came to Mexico. One brother eventually went to Honduras, and changed his spelling to Zelaya. I found all this in a book focusing on the Celayas of Florence, Arizona. I am researching the various Celaya documents from the Church in Altar and the surrounding areas. It will take me about a year to review everything. Check with me later. I can tell you, though, that Atil is the birthplace of the Celayas. No where in Sonora have I seen a higher per capita family name. My wife's family originally came from Atil also. In fact, I think that part of her family tree has a Maria del Refugio Ortega, but I don't know if the husband was Jose Jesus. Something else for me to learn when I get to look at the public and church records of Atil.
