I am a descendant of a line mentioned on pages 604-605 of THE CHAFFEE GENEALOGY, author, William H Chaffee, 1909, published by the Grafton Press, New York, N.Y., 11,909.
I have not been able to locate a copy of this book. It is listed as out of print. It is also in the Library of Congess and in one of the universities in Prince Edward Island, Canada's library.(reference only)
It has my gr. gr. grandfather arriving in PEI and marrying Elizabeth Mitchell (McKenzie)in 1828. He also reports that Joseph Chaffee (gr. gr. grandfather)came from Dorsetshire, England.; born in 1795. The Joseph he identifies had teo brothers, William and George who came to the United States about 1812 and other brothers, Thomas, John, and Phillip who stayed in England.
I have no idea who William H., the author is,but he was accurate in some things, especially that Joseph went to Prince Edward Island, Canada and that he died in 1873.He is buried there.
One discrepancy is where Joseph came from in England. Other family history source has him coming from Devon, born 1795.I have found Joseph Chaffee, Chaffey, Chafe etc. from both those counties in England. same birth year. I have matched all brothers to #'s in the LDS searc site but not a parent.Yhey are all from Devon. Instead of a parent it has under relatives; Amos Peirre Fordham on each record. Anyone know what that means.
My line took CHAFFEY,however there were all kinds of other spellings. An historian said he has found fourteen variations of spellings of the surname. I have seen three sources of the origin of the name all different.
My direct ancestors migrated to California in 1873 after Joseph Sr. died. My gr.grandfather had six children with his first wife. four of those children and two born on PEI from his second marriage all went to California, Humboldt County,Arcata, (Alliance area)Two sons from the first marriage did not go to California. Joseph Jr. stayed on PEI is entire life and his descendants live there today. His only son Samuel never married. So the Chaffey surname is gone in PEI. Joseph Jr. had 8 or 9 daughters, all married and had children etc. Robert went to Boston and became a ship builder. After arriving in California, my gr. grandfather George Sr.had four more children with his second wife.(He fathered 12 total)
The last descendantin Humboldt County with the surname Chaffey, died in 1999 or 2000.
