My two cents worth regarding your interesting data on “our” Thomas Chaffe.I know that there are a lot of us looking for the connection to our “family” in England. However, what you have found are not the right parents for our Thomas.First, the Chaffee Genealogy book fairly well documents that Thomas died about May, 1683, so the death date is not right.Further, the names of Thomas and a sibling Matthew show a different surname spelling than Richard. On its own, however, the spelling differences are not a big deal, given the many versions of “Chaffee”.Just look at the variations in Thomas’s early descendants in the book.
I searched the LDS site and pulled up all Richard Chafy and Thomas Chaffe/Chafy entries. If one digs deeper in these surname selections, the record you cited turns out to be a record submitted by an LDS church member for celestial baptism, or whatever.Unfortunately, no original sources are available for this sort of record.Almost certainly, the submitter has the wrong Thomas to tie to Richard. The Richard cited was married in 1590.Further search at the site shows a Thomas Chafy (same spelling) born in 1591 and died in 1598.Almost certainly, this is the Thomas that goes with Richard, not “our” Thomas.Hopefully, somewhere out there lies the record of the origins of “our” Thomas. But this one is not it.
Of more interest in the LDS records is the clustering of Chaffees (any spelling) in just several settlements in southeast England.Surely, one of these must be the right location.Someone needs to search the dusty shelves in that part of England.Any volunteers?
