I have been working on my family genealogy looking for the Cheers family, my grandmother (mom's mother) was a Cheers. As I have searched I have found many people saying many different things, one was that Cheers was actually Cherry, and I have an uncle that actually changed his name spelling to Cherry. The only Cherry's I have found in the state my Cheers are from was a family of black people named Cherry and they lived distant to where we did.
As I looked in census records and birth/death records for Brunswick County, NC I found the name spelled many ways, Chaires, Chears, Cheairs, Chairs, Cheers.
The oldest ancestor (I believe he is the one) was found in Old Brunswick Town tax record, John Churs. Brunswick Town was settled in 1745 and abandoned in 1772. I have been unable to find anymore about John, his ancestors or his children.
Now to my known family, the furthest back I have been able to definitely trace is my grandmothers great-grandfather..
Alta Verabee Cheers (1922-1996)
George Rockwell Cheers (1892-19??)
William Henry Cheers (1860-1920)
James P. Cheers (1815-????)
I question James P. being born in 1815 and the father of William Henry, but I know men that age did still have children. In the 1880 census William Henry Cheers said his father was born in Virginia, but I have been unable to find any leads in Virginia.
James Cheers served in the Civil War in Brunswick Co, NC in Capt. Galloways Company, Coast Guard stationed at Fort Fisher, rank Private, name spelled CHAIRS.
A few notes I have found:
Notes for Jan De La Chere Aka John Chaires:
Jan De La Chaires. pronounced Chairraise spelled his name Cheaaires, a French Huguenot. came to America on the ship “Fox” in 1662, and settled at New Netherlands. He later moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. settling
in Somerset County. Maryland.
B.Chears to his nephew Mr. C. W. Chears of Atlanta Ga. states in June 1. 1887. My great grandfather came from France. settled in Maryland. had several sons. Eliza, Soloman, Ben. Vachel Eliza had one son. Joseph, moved to Mississippi. I know nothing of him except he left a large family there. Uncles Nat and Ben went to Tennessee where they died, leaving a large family, some are still in Tennessee. Nat owned a large plantation at Holly Springs in Mississippi. My Great Grandfather spelled his name Chaaires and pronounced it Chairraise (french), and so did Uncle Nat and Ben. My oldest brother John. who died in Clayton Alabama during the Civil War spelled it Cheairs. He had no family. Joseph Chears of Mississippi was a wealthy man. The family generally
have black hair and dark complexions. My brother Vachel is living in Union County. North Carolina near the old homestead. He and I are the only Chears in this State. (1887) (signed) Sincerely B. Chears.
