ATTN: Sgt.Major John Champ and John Champ of Pendleton Co., WV
I am not descended from any Champ line but I have been researching my Pendleton Co., WV Hoover line for some time. I have stumbled onto the John Champ name and subsequent research of this man has told me the following. There appears to be confusion about whether he is Sgt.Major John Champ who played a major role in the George Washington and Arnold Benedict affair, the same John Champ found in Pendleton Co., WV or they were 2 different men. I have found the following items, one of which may not be known to most Champ researchers and I would like to share it with you. The John Champ who lived in Pendleton Co.WV died there between April 26, 1804 when he wrote his will and July 3, 1804 when it was recorded at the courthouse after his death. The document can be found in Will book 2, pp.111-114. In the will, he clearly states his wife was Christina and his children were Arrcaly (not clear), Margaret, Thomas and John Champ. These names do not match up with the names of the known children of Sgt.Maj.Champ, based on what appears to be good information apparently taken from a reliable source, most likely his military papers. As below:
Champe, John or John Champ, Phebe, W4153, BLW #948-100, Cont Line (VA) Sol was a native of Loudoun Cty, VA and lived there at enl and after the war moved to Hampshire Co Va. Sol m Phebe _ in July 1782 and sol died about 1798 while on a tour of the western country near Morgantown on the Monongahela, wid was a res of Franklin Cty, OH in 1818 aged nearly 60, wid was allowed a pension by Special Act of congress 7 Jul 1838 and she was still a res of Franklin Cty, OH Chidren shown were Elanor who m Jacob Hartman, Amelia who m William Keyes, Susannah who m David or Daniel Wilfong of Ross Cty OH, William of PIckaway Cty, OH, Mary of Pickaway Cty, OH and was referred to later as Mary Keyes, John of Franklin Co, OH, Nathanial of Detroit MI and was born in Hampshire Co, VA and served in the war of 1812. In 1847 surviving children were: William of Columbus, OH, Nathanial of Detroit, MI John res not shown. In 1847 the heir of sol's 4 dec'd daughters were mentioned but only George W Wilfong was named.
It would appear that the John Champ and Thomas Champ, who have been attributed to Sgt.Maj. Champ are not his sons after all. Sgt.Maj.Champ did have a son named John who apparently lived in Franklin Co.,Ohio and he is obviously not the same John who can be found in Pendleton Co.
The second document is very interesting and involves my ancestor Henry Hoover. Henry IS mentioned in John's will near the end of the document so he was clearly familiar with the Champ family. Found in the Pendleton Co.,WV Will book 2, p. 166 is a document dated July 2, 1805. This document establishes that Henry Hoover became the guardian of the orphans John and Thomas Champ, sons of the deceased John Champ. This document does not imply that their mother Christina was now dead. When the father was deceased, a child was designated an orphan and the court could appoint someone to be the guardian. I do not know what became of the 2 boys as I have never found evidence of them in Henry's household or heard mention of them other than in this one document.
It appears to me that these documents do prove the 2 John Champs were completely different men. I will leave that up to Champ researchers to determine but hopefully these documents will help. I will be more than happy to scan and e-mail copies of both documents to anyone who is interested. Just contact me at [email protected] and I will send copies.
