Talk to the living first. Talk to your parents, and their siblings. Once you have exhausted them move on to other sources but be prepared to come back to the living with more questions.
Look for him in the first census after he was born. That should give you some leads as to his ancestry. Search the web site FreeBDM for information about him and his ancestors. Once you have posted questions to Genforum don't be disappointed if you don't get an immediate response. Some times it may take a few months or enev a few years but eventually some one else searching the same family will find you.
