Re: John Channing 1841 Torquay, England
Unfortunately, I neglected to post my change of email address to this forum and as a result I missed many replies that were generated as a result of my posting. To summarize my research interest:
I am researching John Channing born around 1841 - 1844..possibly in Torquay as that is what his gravestone in Newfoundland says. He came to Newfoundland sometime before 1863 (when his first child was born). He was married in the catholic church and converted all on the same day in 1879. My father used to say that he was an apprentice to a fellow in England and ran away. Another story I have heard was that he was a crewman on a ship and was injured during a stopover in Newfoundland and left there. He is the only Channing to come to Newfoundland ...there are no others. I appreciate any help I may get.If he is in your database he would most likely show up as having no record of marriage, children or death as these all occurred in Newfoundland.
