I am a descendant of William Chearby, aka Chearpy, of Quebec. His origin is unknown. He was the son of Thomas and Anne. Her maiden name was rendered as De Cliz.At the time of William's wedding in 1722,to Marie Millet, the priest wrote in the marriage record that he was English-speaking. Initially he spelled his name Chearpy, but by the mid-1700's the spelling had become Chearby. Since then other variations have included Charby and Sherby, with Charby being the spelling used by our Canadian relatives.
If anyone has any ideas that might help me trace this man's origin please let me know.
