Re: Charters family of Balinalee, Ireland
My father was Francis Humphreys, born in Garvagh House, Currygrane, Ballinalee in 1914.His Grandmother was Alicia Charters (born 1841) whose Father was Alex Charters (born 1811).
I am living in Co Roscommon, Ireland, and am currently trying to compile a Family Tree for discussion at an upcoming family reunion.I have quite good information back as far as 1811, but my information before this is vague.I see from your post that the Family Tree you have, has information going back 2 generations before Robert Charters.I would be very interested in finding out more.I can see where you must “fit in” to the tree I have compiled.I think that your Great Grandparents must have been David Charters (born 1808) who married Marianne (born 1807).The siblings I have on my Tree for this David Charters are: Robert Charters who married Elizabeth McKeon in 1836, Fanny (born 1810), and my Great Great Grandfather Alex Charters (1811) who married Alice Wilton (born 1812).
I was recently with Rose Forster in Ballinalee who has the Parish records. The furthest back I could get was a burial record of a “Simon Charters” (born 1758) and a Mary Charters (born 1860).I do not know if they were perhaps the parents of our ancestors, David & Alex Charters.I also found record of an “Alex Charters” as a Flax grower in 1796.I am really hoping that you may have more information than me.These parents would be our “Common Ancestors”, making you and I“3rd cousins once removed”
There is another theory which I am currently investigating. My father always maintained that the Charters family were descended from French Huguenots. This would only have beenheresay. However, I noticed that in the very oldest Parish Records in Ballinalee that our ancestors had spelt Charters the French way “Chartres”.Also Chartres are listed as a Huguenot family which fled to Ireland in the 1600s.The final clue has come in the form of what is know as “Dupuytrens Contracture”, (or permanently bent “little fingers”).I have 1 of them, my father had 2, and his Mother had 2.These were inherited from the Charters side of the family.I have found a connection between this condition and the French Huguenots. I am interested to know if any of your family has them? Also, have you any thoughts on this theory?
Finally, I am wondering if you managed to contact Michael Charters of the original post on GenForum. He was interested in information about David Charters who drowned on the Titanic.(he was my Grandmother’s 2nd cousin).I’m attaching herewith some info about him.
I’m would be glad to pass on any information I might have that would be ofinterest to you, and very interested in any information you might have for me!
