Re: Patrick Charters
My name is William Henry Charters the sixth (Billy) and Patrick Charters is either the brother or possibly the uncle of my g-g-grandfather , William Charters. William was born in Cork Co. Ireland in 1841 (probably Buttevant) and came to the U.S. as an infant (I think). William came to New York, then Madison Co., Ohio, and finally settled in Butler, Missouri. I have a letter written to my grandparents in 1972 from a woman names Sister Mary Patrick Charters in Virginia. In it she states that William and Patrick were brothers who came to America together from Cork and settled in South Charleston. The only reason that I said Patrick may be William’s uncle instead of brother is because I have a copy of William’s obituary from Butler that says:
“ William H. Charters, Sr., who lost his life by being crushed and mangled under a train at Butler, Missouri, Wednesday, July 5, 1916, was born in New York City, in 1850. In 1852 he removed with his parents to London, Madison County, Ohio, where he was reared on his uncle’s farm. His mother died when he was ten months of age, and his father was killed in a railroad accident in 1855.
In 1871 he took charge of the Greenwood Shorthorns, owned by David Selsor of London, Ohio. This was one of the most noted herds in America at that time and continued with it until January, 1881. In January, 1881, he was united in marriage with miss Margaret Carroll of London, Ohio, and in the fall of 1881 they came to Bates County, Missouri, where he has ever since resided. He engaged in extensively in farming and stock raising and was well known to a great many of the people in the county.”
I was wondering if Patrick may have been the uncle referred to and Patrick’s brother, William, the one who died in a train accident in 1855? This obituary states that William was born in New York City in 1850 but when I looked up David Selsor in the Madison County census he has a William Charters living with him who states his year of birth as 1841 or 1842 and his place of birth as Ireland. I have a lot of information about William but I can’t seem to fill in the blanks. What was William and Patrick’s relationship? When and where, exactly, did they immigrate from? What was their port of entry into the U.S.? Who were their parents? I have William’s death certificate and it says that his parents were William Charters and Margret Lowery. Do those names sound familiar to you? Do you know anything about Patrick’s parents? What are the Charters’ family “Lives of the Saints?” I am sending you a copy of the 1972 letter sent to my grandparents and would be happy to send you copies of anything else that I have. I hope to hear from you soon.
