Could you tell me anymore about Capt. John REYNOLDS?My Arthur PATTERSON was born MAY 1794 in NYC and became an orphan with his brother. We don't know what happened to his brother.Heard he went down toward Baltimore somewhere.I know Arthur was adopted by the time of the War of 1812, according to Donald Chace SHAW's reasearch.Would this John Reynold's have been at the Battle at Lundy's Lane? Where was Capt. Reynold's living in Niagara Co., NY?
My Dad's first cousin, Donald Chace SHAW, started researching in the 1940's, writing letters to various societies and government agencies to try and find out about Arthur PATTERSON.He owned an outfit that belonged to ARthur which he had believed to be a drummer boy outfit, but wasn't sure.He had it analyzed and looked at.At present, it is in the possession of Fort Niagara in Youngstown, NIagara Co., NY.He was told it was probably from about 1840's, used for civil and military wear.It was the oldest uniform in their possession at the time of his donation. I have a xerox copy of it and the letters sent by Fort Niagara.
We had believed that maybe Arthur was part of the family of Capt. Andrew REYNOLDS.His name and Arthur's were on the list of Veteran's of Niagara County, NY for the War of 1812.Both are listed from Corwin and Olcott.Do you have info on Capt. Andrew REYNOLDS?
There is an Arthur PATTERSON - #1241 in "New York Militia and Volunteers, War of 1812" by W. Van Marter, Lyon, NY, 1858. We believe this is our Arthur PATTERSON, but didn't see the final letters to confirm it. The state of New York Division of Military and NAval Affairs said this Private Arthur PATTERSON's service was with the Regular United States Army, not with a NY State organization. The one I mentioned was in Capt. Peter Miller's Co. of the 2nd US Vol. Infantry, commanded by Col. Samuel Hawkins. They suggested writing to the NAtional Archives and Records Service in Washington, DC.This was back in 1967.
I also have info from a Biography of important Niagara peoplecalled "Niagara County, NY, Vol. II., by Edward Williams, Chicago, 1921. In it it states that the father of Mrs. Lauretta WRIGHT was Arthur PATTERSON. It tells of his parents dying during an epidemic in NYC, left in an orphanage, and adopted by a Captain REYNOLDS of Olcott, NY. He accompanied Capt. REYNOLDS as a drummer boy with his regiment at Lundy's Lane and Chippewa, Canada.
There are my sources.
Thank you for the info you sent on Stephen CHACE and his wife Julianne REYNOLDS.Is Julianne REYNOLDS related to Capt. REYNOLDS?
