Re: Unknown cousins
Martha Annis "Mattie" Chears who married Jason Rogers is my direct ancestor. She was born 7 May 1822 and 9 Jun 1909 in Union County, NC.I believe she must have been the daughter of Elizabeth Walden. Also Nancy, Mary, Emily Alston and either Eliza or Rosey were Elizabeth's daughters; and I think there was one more that was born in the late 1830s who died young.Rosey married a Knight, first name unknown to me, and had three children in the 1840s: Elizabeth Jane, Margaret Ann and Rosey. It's quite possible the older Rosey was one of Vachel's daughters born in the 1820s...the 1840 census indicates there were four.I had considered Eliza to be one of the four, but the Mortality Census of 1860 says Eliza was 46 when she died of Bronchitis. However, the 1840 census does not support a daughter that age in the household, and the 1850 census indicates she was 30, not 36. Eliza died in 1859 unmarried.
At this point I'm only sure of Sarah, John and William as children of Vachel's first wife, but I know there were two more daughters. Vachel was apparently a widower in early 1820 when that census was taken, adding to the body of evidence that Eliza may have been born to the first wife of Vachel.Sarah married Ezekiel Parker of Montgomery County in the early 1830s.He was single and living in Montgomery in 1830 near the Usserys. He and Sarah died before 1850 and their three children can be found in Montgomery County in 1850 living with two different families that must be part of the extended Parker family. I know little of John or William Chears and need to do some research on them.Perhaps you have information on them you could share. And also, please tell me how it is known that Vachel's first wife was Annis Swor and she and Vachel were married 9 OCT 1806.I've never heard of that surname, and cannot find it in the area during that time period.Do you think perhaps it was really Swan? There was a John Swan in Anson County in 1800.
Also, please tell me what you know of Benjamin Chears, Elizabeth & Vachel's first son as well as how it is known Elizabeth's maiden name was Walden. Is Vachel Chear's death certificate how everyone knows Elizabeth's last name was Walden, or are their other records?
By the way, Vachel Chear's will was written in 1858 and probated in July of 1867.I see online in many places that he supposedly died in 1862, but I do not know if this is correct.I would suspect his death was nearer to 1867.
