Re: Cheers in Brunswick County, North Carolina
I have some of what you are looking for...alot of the info(names at least) can be found in L Berlyn's booklet "my family"it's hidden but some is there.
As the the name...I have seen various spellingsthe origional one for James was Chaires...then Chairs, Chears, and lastly Cheers. As far as what I can piece together.... there were two of the brothers that "moved to Wilmington and changed their name 'back' to Cherry"....there may be some legitimacy to this as there were some men last name Cherry during James' time that had immigrated from Ireland however, some have contended that it comes from the french Le Cher....since I haven't been able to verify either one I can't tell you which is the most correct.
What I can do is fill in some of the missing dates for our more recent kin.My grandmother was Martha Cheers, daughter of Claude Swindale Cheers.
Please contact me if you have any questions...you might well have come across something I have not.You can reply either by private email or on here.
