Roseman Ginnaurie or Rosemond Chenery?
My ancestor, John Elmer, married Rosamond Ginnaurie on Oct 1669 in Hartford, Hartford, CT.She was born about a 1648 in Hartford and was a maid to Eleazor Way.I found this information in old Hartford court records on an online tree:
"iJOHN, b. about 1644 (aged twenty-one on 5 May 1665 [WMJ 503]); m. about October 1669 Rosamund Ginnuarie. (On 2 September "Mr. Eliezer Way" complained against "John Elmore for his abusive expressions of him & his wife in a letter to which his the said Elmor's name is subscribed & for publishing a determined & concluded contract of matrimony betwixt himself & Roseman the said Mr. Waye's maid without his the said Way's leave, consent & against his good liking" [Hartford PD 3(courtside):89]. On 23 September 1669 "Edward Elmor acknowledgeth himself bound in a recognizance of forty pounds to the county of Hartford the condition is that Roseaman Ginniaure shall personally appear at the next county court ... to answer Mr. Way's complaint against her for stealing his goods &c." [Hartford PD 3(courtside):92]"
As far as I can determine, nobody has found parents or relatives for this maid to Eleazor Way.I DID find that Eleazor was married to Mary in Boston, Suffolk Co., MA and that his parents were George Way and Sarah Purchase.George died in 1641 in Dorchester, Dorset, England.
In 1990 I received two letters from Arthur A. Jannery of Westfield, MA.He said he often visited the CT State Library in Hartford. His name was spelled Jenery in 1812 when his father immigrated from Fehron Parish, Essex County, England. However, he felt the name was originally Chinnery or Chenery.
Arthur wondered if Rosamond (or Roseaman) was a Chinery or Chenery and that her name was spelled wrong in early records.Of course there was no set way of spelling then and possibly she was illiterate.
I have only found two Rosamond Chinery or Cinery females on the internet.Neither lived during that timeframe. The first was the daughter of Edward and Rosamond Chinery- named Rosamond born 29 Dec 1777 in Great Waldingford, Suffolk, England. She was christened 23 Mar 1778 - also in Great Waldingford. The second was Rosamand Chenery born 1868 in Middesboro, Yorkshire, England. So few Rosamonds!
Do you suppose I'm correct in guessing that my Roseaman Ginniaure (family shows her as Rosamond Ginnaurie in trees) was a Chenery?
