I am descended from William of Roxbury. My husband and I were on the Isle of Sheppey, England in May of this year. Sir Thomas Cheyney (Cheney)is buried in the Minster Abby in front of the Pulpit. The cane was presented by King HENRY the 8th, he and Sir Thomas were good friends as well as the fact that Sir Thomas was the Kings Treasurer and advisor. The family lived at SHURLAND HALL, as a descendent had married the daughter of Sir Robert deShurland. Thomas also built a home at EastChurch on the Island, which was destroyed by his son Henry. We also visited the Family History Center in London as well as the Archives at Canterbury Cathedral. It was fun walking the same ground as our ancestors.
Your information concerning the cane and Mark Cheney is very interesting as it is the first time I have seen that name, altho I know some of the Cheneys went to New York.
Pope's genealogy altho generally accepted as the best source does have some errors. The ship was "Defence" but is mispelled in various histories.
