Hi Louise,
Just read your message and see that you are a descendant of Jean and Anastasie-Angelique (Romard) Schumph. The rest of the Schumph cousins are known as "Jomphe" at the Magdalen Islands, where Jean's brothers Laurent & Etienne were brought to be adopted. There were also other children of the Jomphe family, per an article by Rev. Addé Hubert of the Islands, they wereMarie-Merance (m Thomas Levesque); Georges-Burkard; your Jean; Elisabeth; Marie-Josephe (m Louis Carrier); Laurent (m Julie Arseneau); and Etienne (m Madeleine Lapierre). They were all the children of a German soldier Christian Schomphe married in the Anglican Cathedral at Quebec City to Marie-Monique Samson on 3 Jan 1791.The three boys were adopted by Acadian families in the Islands and at Cheticamp, and became "Acadians" by their marriages into these communities.
According to The Bulletin d'Histoire et de Généalogie de la Société Saint-Pierre, Cheticamp, NS, Vol. IX, #4, p.7: Georges-Donat Schumph (or Schomphe) did indeed marry Luce Chiasson, d/o of Léonard Chiasson dit "Konock" and Cordule Chiasson, and it says also that they emigrated to Newfoundland with most of their children. I do not have a year of birth for Luce, but I presume she was born shortly after her parents marriage. I do know that Léonard CHIASSON, born at Chéticamp, NS 30 Dec 1815, son of Firmin Chiasson and Helene Poirier, married (1st) at Chéticamp, NS on 12 Nov 1839 Cordule CHIASSON, daughter of David Chiasson and Céleste Cormier. They were both second cousins on one side and double third cousins on another, having received dispensations at their marriage of 3-3c. and double 4-4c.
Their other children were: Céleste, b 1842; Odile, b 1843; Zéphirin, b 1844; Guillaume, b 1847; David, b 1851; Germain, b 1853; Firmin, b 1856 (who m Magdalen Islands 1892 with Philomene Arseneau and migrated to Lac-au-Saumon, QC.); Mathilde, b 1857; Léon, b 1863; and Fidele m 1877 to Julie Deveau). From this list you can see the gap from Léonard's marriage date to the birth of Céleste in 1842.I presume your ancestor Luce's birth fits in between, ca 1840-41.Donat was some 10+ years older than her.
Léonard Chiasson remarried at Chéticamp on 27 Jan 1867 to Martine LEBLANC, daughter of Marin & Marie Cormier. He died there in 1889.
Firmin Chiasson was s/o Basile & Anne-Adelaide Arsenault
Helene Poirier was d/o Raymond & Marie Bois
m Cheticamp, NS ca 1802
Basile Chiasson was s/o Paul & Louise Boudrot
Anne-Adelaide Arsenault d/o Francois & Anne Bourgeois
m ca 177_
Paul Chiasson s/o Jacques & Marie-Josephe Arsenault
Louise Boudrot d/o Francois & Jeanne Landry
m ca 1755
Jacques Chiasson s/o Sebastien & Marie Blou
Marie-Josephe Arsenault d/o Abraham & Jeanne Gaudet
m Port-Royal, Acadia
(I'm sure you can get the rest from here.)Hope this info helps somewhat.Sincerely,Dennis M. Boudreau
