George A. Chisholm d. end of Aug first of Sept 1862 shooting

Have gotten copy of cemetery record of George A Chisholm who was buried Sept 3, 1862 in Woodland Cem. Cuyahoga, OH. It says he was Shot.Is there any one who might have an idea why this shooting happened? Address's listed are Merchant Street which is where the family lived in Cleveland,OH and Bowling Green. But I do not know if this Bowling Green is in OH.
Any help I can get would be appreciated. Thanks
