Murdock Chisholm and Flora MacPherson N. Carolina

How do we know that Murdock Chisholm of Montgomery County NC was married to Flora MacPherson? I have a document that she signed (x'd) in 1783 and she x'd Mary Chisholm. Please help...big stumbling block.
