Hi Jeremy,
I have heard that the spelling variation "Chisam" is common to descendents of one of "Blind John" Chisholm's sons, Hickory John.
Whether your ancestral family was from Kentucky, they for sure were somewhere else before that.DNA may be able to help you if you believe you have native american roots, I am not sure of that procedure, however there is a simple test which can simply follow your direct male ancestral line backwards in time. If the line leads to a Chisholm then the Y DNA test will most likely show this. If it leads to a native american who has adopted a Chisholm type name, then that will also show up in the Y DNA test.
If your line leads back to Hickory John Chisam, it willfind its way back to Virginia, perhaps with a detour through Kentucky,Tennesee, and South Carolina, and then back over the water to the Borders of Scotland, ancestral homeland of Chisholms. Just let me know if you want more info on how to access the Chisholm DNA project, its all very simple and can be done online. regards
