on saturday last, mr coroner settle held an inquest at hartlepool, on the body of a man named patrick chute, who had been killed the previous day while endeavouring to stop a runaway horse belonging to the north eastern railway company. it appeared that about half past two o'clock a horse drawing one of the compan's rolleys, laden with wood, suddenly took fright at the sound of an engine, and dashed from the goods warehouses through the embankment near the ship inn, galloping down the embankment in the coal drops in the direction of the docks. as it reached mr markham's residence the deceased rushed at the animal's head and stopped it; but unfortunately he was pushed violently between the shaft of the rolley and a post. he was most severely injured, as he fell to the ground instantly. he was conveyed to the hospital, where he died around half an hour later. it was found that he had sustained a fracture of the ribs, and a wound in the shoulder blade. the jury returned a verdict of 'accidental death'. the deceased, who was 65 years old, leaves a widow and three children, who, it is said, reside in liverpool.
