My mother's name is Ilona Csizek. It is the Magyar (Hungarian) spelling of Cizek or Chizek. Cizek is the name of a song-bird. In the Magyar language csicseg (pronounced "chicheg")means "chirrup, twitter, chirp, or cheep." Thus it is a name that imitates the sound of a song-bird.
My mother is kind of a family historian. Her father was Ferencz Csizek, born in Miskolc, Hungary. Ferencz's father, Antal Csizek (i.e. Cizek), came from Moravia (Ger., Mehranen or Mahren; Czech, Morava, from the river Morava), probably in the early 1800s. He was stationed as a navy officer in Croatia, most likely in Fiume. His wife, Roza Karl, was Austrian.
According to family tradition one of our ancestors was the captain of a castle in Moravia, which in 1029 was finally incorporated with the crown of Bohemia. When in about 1423 the Hussites invaded Moravia, he instructed his three sons to make their escapes from the castle, using different escape routes to avoid capture by the Hussites. One of his sons remained in Moravia, the other went to Croatia, and the third one probably to Austria.
Reportedly the Cizek ancestors by "origin" or "race" were Vend, Wend, Wind, Winadi, Wens, Vindi, Veneti, Venedi, Eneti, or Vindelici. The names Wend or Wind were applied to various Gallic or Celtic tribes, and then given by the Celts to the Wendic tribes living north of them. The names Vend or Wend may come come from the German "wanderer" (Magyar "vandor"), and means a tribe or person which or who was caused to wander from a settled place of abode, and roams about, having no home or certain place of abode. Probably these wandering tribes got stuck with this name, "For they are continually traversing and infesting with robberies all the forests and mountains lying between the Peucinians and Fenniens," as Tacitus wrote about the Venedians.
Let me add that my mother's father was Ferencz Csizek, his father was Antal Cizek (born 1853 in Wazani, Moravia, died 1937 in Miskolc, Hungary) and his father was Johan Cizek, who lived in Wazani, Moravia. Johan Cizek's grave is in Austerlitz, Austria. Johan's wife was Marianna Mrnka. They had two sons, Antal and Johan. Antal's wife was Roza Karl (born 1863, died 1917 in Miskolc.) Her parents were Mikhail Karl and Julianna Stramec, from the Steyr or Steier region of Austria. Mikhail Karl died in 1787 or 1788.
Antal Cizek and his wife, Roza Karl, had nine children. Two of them died at an early age, but Ilona, Maria, Ferencz (my mother's father), Antal, Rozsika, Terezia, and Karola remained.
