I am the Great Great Grandson of James Perry Clair.I to am looking for info on John Clair. The info I have links James Perry Clair and Ida May Allison.Do yo have offical info that links Nancy J. Jones with John Clair in Penn.?I believe Mary listed below is Johns second wife.
Have you found any additional info on John Clair and Nancy Jane Jones? We to have little on John Clair.Their is a John Clair with wife Nancy listed in the 1850 census in Monroe County, Iowa.it indicates he was born in Penn.
Here is a e-mail I received several months ago from a cousin. In BOLD. Below.
Irwin Williams (daughter of Lillie Mae Clair & Jennings Bryan Williams) (grandson of James Perry Clair and Ida Mae Allison) contacted me, in answer to a letter I had written requesting any information about the Clair family. He had some papers that said James Perry Clair's parents were John Clair and Nancy Jane Jones.Irwin has not done any research, but his brother, Edward had the papers and he died sometime last summer. When Irwin was going though some of Ed's things, he came accross the letter I had written a couple of years ago and called me.Anyway, this sort of confirms my belief that James Perry and Francis Marion Clair are brothers.
I found a 1860 Iowa, Mahaska County, Scott Twp. census (page 3) showing:
John Clair50farm laborerborn in Virginia
Mary27housewifeborn in Kentucky
FRANCIS18farm laborerborn in Indiana
John W.14born in Indiana
Geo. W.12born in Indiana
JAMES10born in Indiana
Sarah7born in Indiana
Lucinda4born in Iowa
Now Francis was born in 1840 according to his death certificate, so the 18 would be a little off (this census was taken July 1, which would be before his birthday for 1960, so it would be off just 1 year),and James Perry was born in
1848 (according to the date on his tomb stone), 1853 (according to his death certificate), 1849 according to the 1870 census, 1852 according to the 1880 census, or 1853 according to the 1900 census--so take your pick!
This census lists his wife as Mary and only 27 years old. There is no way she could be the mother of those first 3 or 4 children! My thinking is that this is a 2nd marriage.I have been unable to find anything on a Nancy Jane Jones, but it is very probable that she died young and John remarried this Mary.
