Lenora Rivers Clanton was daughter of John M. Clanton and Martha Debusk. John had two sisters, Mary Ann "Polly" Clanton (married William Russell Webb) and Martha Jane Clanton (married John Robinson). They were children of John Madison Clanton and Nelly Cuiser. They lived in South Carolina and moved to Monroe County, Tennessee, where all three of their children were married. John Sr. was born 1792 in SC (1850 census) or 1801 in North Carolina (1860 census). John was elected to serve as one of the seven aldermen for Madisonville, Monroe Co., TN, in 1851. He MAY be the John Clanton who served in Captain James Douglas Company from South Carolina in the War of 1812. This John had a wife named Nelly....so it could be the John I am writing about. He probably is a descendant of one of three brothers who moved into Kershaw County, SC, during 1770's and 1780's...perhaps a grandson. These three brothers were named David, Ephraim and Richard Clanton and the name John was common in their families. They were sons of Richard and Agnes (West) Clanton of Surry County, Virginia.Tom.
