Cynthia M. (Sprague) Clark, b.1849, wife of Erasmus Clark, lived IL & MO
I have an original 4 generation Cabinet Card photograph of “Maude (Clark) Hough - wife of Ira” with her daughter Ruth Hough and with Maude’s mother Cynthia M. (Sprague) Clark along with an elderly lady who had to be Lydia D. (Hardy) Clark. I’d like to get this photo back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Sedalia (Pettis Co.) MO, and Maude looks to be about 25, daughter Ruth about 5, Cynthia Clark about 45, and the elderly lady about age 75 or more.
I found Maude Clark Hough’s obituary in the 29 Mar 1944 Brooklyn (NY) Eagle, showing she was widow of Ira Hough, daughter of Erasmus Clark, and survived by daughter Ruth (Hough) Butler of Brooklyn. In 1900 Dallas, TX census, Ira D. and Maud C. Hough (born Sep 1872) lived with son and daughter Ruth (born Nov 1891).
Cynthia M. Sprague was born Jan 1849 Van Buren Co., IA, daughter of John G. Sprague and wife Eliza (Beach) Sprague. Cynthia married Erasmus Manfred Clark in Christian Co., IL in 1870, and they lived in 1900 in Post Oak (Johnson Co.) MO. Parents of Erasmus were Joseph H. Clark and Lydia D. (Hardy) Clark.
At first glance, I assumed that the four generations were of the girl Ruth, mother Maude, grandmother Cynthia with Cynthia’s mother Eliza (Beach) Sprague - until I found that Eliza died about 1886 before Ruth was born. The mother-in-law of Cynthia (and mother of her husband Erasmus) was Lydia D. (Hardy) Clark, who was born Apr 1824 in KY, lived in 1900 in Pettis Co., MO and died May 1902 in Bates, MO. Surely she is the elderly lady and the 4th generation.
