Where did it start for me?
My maiden name is Clayborne,I spoke with my great-uncle, Raymond Clayborne who said that our heritage came started with William Claiborne, who came to Jamestown. My family moved to Richmond and other parts of western VA, some live in Gloucester, VA at present. The Gloucester relatives spell Clayborne, the Richmond and Western VA spell Claiborne. Obviously there had to be slaves in the line somewhere for me to have this name.If there is anyone out there that has any information on where to find public records for servants of William Claiborne, from the 1600's I would greatly appreciate it.My grandfathers name is William and my late great-grandfather was called Priest Clayborne.I was also told that in the beginning there was in an "i", but it was changed to a "y" in public records at some point. Thanks for any help that is offered.
