Clemmons becomes Clemons in 1883 Texas
Two great grandsons of Martha Coggin & Samuel Thompson Clemmons of Wilson County, TN -- George W. & Etheldred W. (Dred), loaded their families in covered wagons in 1883 and set out for TX.Some of the party, including their mother came down with measles and they stopped in the Dallas area.George and his wife Florence Pollard stayed with the sick and Dred with his wife Sarah Armenda "Mindy" Lasater and the able bodied moved on to Waco, TX where family awaited them.Their mother Elizabeth "Betsy" Merritt Clemmons died and is buried in the Dallas area. When well, the group moved to join the rest of the family.
Dred settled in the Gatesville area with his family. He died of pneumonia January 7, 1904. Sarah Armenda Lasater Clemons died Dec. 7, 1947.
George and his wife, Florence Pollard, with their children settled in Osage.George Clemons died March 12, 1900 of a lung/throat disorder after being bedfast for about a year.Florence Pollard Clemons died Feb. 2, 1930.
These two Clemmons guys dropped the second "M" in their names and became Clemons. Our uncle said they were too poor to afford the second M.Most of the two families are buried in the Osage Cemetery in Coryell County, TX. and many of the descendents still live in Coryell and McLennan County.Fairly extensive history is available, both before and after the move to Texas.
